Dragon Eyes Full Movie Review:

Despite getting top billing on the DVD cover Jean Claude Van Damme isn’t the main protagonist of the movie, it’s actually retired MMA fighter Cung Le. Van Damme plays a fairly minor part as Le’s mentor. Le plays a man who is recently released from jail with the intention of cleaning up a crime ridden neighborhood for reasons which are revealed much later in the movie but not really. What i mean is nothing is really explained in great detail and it feels like some scenes are missing or they were shown in the wrong order. It’s a simple story but i was still thinking “What the hell?” at certain points. The fight scenes are excellent, Le kicks all kinds of butt and some parts are really brutal with no annoying shakey cam so at least the main reason anyone will be watching this has no problems. However Cung Le doesn’t have the charisma to lead a movie and his character is really shallow, we don’t learn much about him at all. Peter Weller (Robocop!!!!) plays a corrupt police chief and he hams it up in every scene he’s in. You can tell he was having a good time and he was the best part of the movie for me. I enjoyed the action scenes a lot and i laughed out loud a few times, it’s a decent enough night’s entertainment with some beers but don’t expect this to be a classic which you’ll remember for years. I’ve seen much worse.
